More info on certain treats that you must be wary of
Dark chocolate:
Many people believe that, just because dogs can't eat chocolate, rats can't either. This, however, is not true. Rats can be given DARK chocolate once a week, as a special treat. But, like the rat wheel, some rats may not enjoy the strong flavour of dark chocolate. Also, if your rat has a respiratory disease, and they are having trouble breathing normally, dark chocolate can help your rat breathe better. It is recommended that if your rat starts to sneeze a lot, give them some dark chocolate before taking them to the vet.
Pineapple and cheese:
Pineapples and cheese are good for rats, but, they can cause extreme diarrhoea if consumed too much. This is the same for most other dairy foods, as well.
What treats can be used for
Treats can be used for luring rats into new boxes or hammocks or Ratty Towers (I will be making a new Ratty Tower blog soon!). It takes a while for rats to get used to new areas. Luring them with treats encourages them to go in and explore! Treats can also be used as a bribe to teach tricks. Eventually, rats will do the trick on command, but treats are a good boost if you have just started teaching your rat a new trick.
Darwin and Galileo's favourite treats
Darwin really loves to guzzle down pineapple and slowly nibble on dried pasta.
Galileo loves to chomp down on carrots and crunch cooked spaghetti.
They both really love peas!!!
I hope you have enjoyed this blog post! Stay tuned for more!
